Pawan Singh, Ph.D.
Pawan Sinha is a Professor of Vision and Computational Neuroscience at MIT. He earned his undergraduate degree from IIT-Delhi and his Master’s and Ph.D. from MIT. His lab combines experimental and computational techniques to study how the brain learns to recognize objects and encodes them in memory. Dr. Sinha founded Project Prakash, a humanitarian-scientific initiative providing treatment for curable blindness in India while advancing research in visual learning. His honors include the PECASE, Sloan Fellowship, Merck Scholars Award, and Troland Award. His work has been featured in The New York Times, TIME, ABC News, and NPR.
Amy Chu, M.B.A.
Amy Chu is a writer, publisher, and social impact advocate with a background in business development and management consulting across biotech, technology, publishing, and nonprofit sectors. She is the founder of Alpha Girl Comics and a frequent speaker at international comic conventions. Amy has held leadership roles, including Executive Director of the Asian American Arts Alliance and Co-founder and Publisher of A. Magazine. She currently serves as Co-President of the Harvard Business School Asian American Alumni Association and sits on the boards of the Asian Women Giving Circle and the Harvard Business School Alumni Board. Amy earned her MBA from Harvard Business School, a BA from Wellesley College in East Asian Studies, and an S.B. in Architectural Design from MIT.
Pamela Lipson, Founder, Imagen Incorporated
Pamela Lipson received her B.A from Harvard University and an M.S. and PhD from the MIT Artificial Intelligence Lab. Her doctoral research was honored with the George M. Sprowls Award for Exceptional Research. She is an expert in computer vision, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. Pam has been recognized by the MIT Technology Review as a TR100 - 'one of 100 innovators under 35 whose work and ideas will change the world' and also by the World Economic Forum as a Technology Pioneer. Pam has appeared in many publications including Time Magazine, the New York Times, and ABC's Good Morning America. One of her creations was featured in the Guinness Book of World Records.
Laura Flug, Director, American Technion Society, New York
Laura Flug is a dedicated supporter of education and community healthcare initiatives. As Director at the American Technion Society in New York, she provides financial and operational support to the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, one of the world’s leading science and engineering universities. In addition to her role with the Technion, Laura serves on the Board of the Gurwin Jewish Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Commack, New York. Through her work, she contributes to advancing scientific innovation and improving eldercare services. Laura’s long-standing commitment to philanthropy and community service highlights her passion for fostering academic excellence and accessible healthcare.

Deepti Nijhawan, Executive Director
Deepti Nijhawan is an experienced nonprofit leader with a background in higher education administration, architecture, and urban planning. As Executive Director of Project Prakash Foundation, she oversees operations, partnerships, and outreach initiatives. Previously, Deepti served as Managing Director of the MIT-India Program, sending over 300 MIT students to India for internships, and as Director of India Initiatives at Boston University. She has also taught at MIT’s Edgerton Center and led MITHAS, a premier South Asian arts organization in New England. An architect and urban planner by training, Deepti holds dual Master’s degrees in City Planning and Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor of Architecture from Delhi University’s School of Planning and Architecture.
Shweta Chooramani, Program Manager
Amy is a professional writer, the publisher of Alpha Girl Comics, and a frequent speaker and guest at comic conventions around the world. Amy has experience in management consulting and business development across multiple industries, including biotech, tech, publishing and the nonprofit sector. She was an Executive Director of the Asian American Arts Alliance, consultant at Asian American Federation, co-founder and Publisher of A. Magazine, and Chairman of the Chinatown Arts Council. Currently, she is Co-President of the Harvard Business School Asian American Alumni Association, member of the Harvard Business School Alumni Board, and a board member of the Asian Women Giving Circle supporting women's arts and activism. Amy received her MBA from Harvard Business School, and a BA from Wellesley College in East Asian Studies and S.B. from MIT in Architectural Design.
Vikram Nijhawan, Marketing & Communication Intern
Vikram Nijhawan currently serves as the Marketing and Communication Intern at Project Prakash Foundation. In this role, he supports the organization’s outreach initiatives, social media presence, and digital engagement strategies, helping to raise awareness about Project Prakash’s mission and impact. Vikram contributes to the development of communication materials, campaign planning, and stakeholder engagement activities. Passionate about storytelling and social change, he aims to amplify narratives around childhood blindness and the transformative work being done through Project Prakash. Vikram is also involved in content creation and assists in designing promotional and educational resources for diverse audiences.
Michal Fux, Ph.D., Research Scientist, MIT
Dr. Michal Fux is a research scientist at MIT specializing in cognitive anthropology and comparative psychology. Her work takes a cross-cultural, cross-species approach to understanding cognition, with research conducted in Israel, the UK, South Africa, and the U.S. She established a long-term research fieldsite in South Africa’s Drakensberg Mountains and collaborates with Zulu communities. Dr. Fux is also overseeing Project Prakash’s expansion into South Africa.

Marin Vogelsang, Ph.D., Postdoctoral Fellow, MIT
Marin Vogelsang is a JSPS Postdoctoral Fellow in the Sinha Lab. She received a B.Sc. in Biological Sciences from the University of Tokyo (Japan), a M.Sc. in Neural Systems & Computation from UZH/ETH Zurich (Switzerland), a second B.Sc. in Computer Science from EPFL (Switzerland), and a Dr. rer. nat. in Cognitive Science from the University of Osnabrueck (Germany). In her doctoral work, supervised by Prof. Gordon Pipa and Prof. Pawan Sinha, she studied the role of initial degradations in visual learning of humans and machines, engaging in simulations with deep neural networks as well as studies of Prakash children. In her postdoctoral research, she is focusing on temporal aspects of sensory processing in Prakash children and the incorporation of time into deep neural networks.
Lukas Vogelsang, Ph.D., Postdoctoral Fellow, MIT
Lukas Vogelsang is a Simons Postdoctoral Fellow in the MIT Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences, supervised by Prof. Pawan Sinha and Prof. Charles Nelson. Previously, he obtained a B.Sc. in Cognitive Science from the University of Osnabrueck (Germany), a M.Sc. in Neural Systems & Computation from UZH/ETH Zurich (Switzerland), and a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from EPFL (Switzerland), supervised by Prof. Michael Herzog. His research spans sensory development, visual perception, and temporal processing, with a particular focus on how the perceptual system may rely on temporal regularities in the environment as well as limited sensory inputs early in life. He combines computational modeling with experimental work in both typical and atypical development, including studies with autistic individuals and Prakash children.
Sidney Diamond, M.D., Ph.D.
Dr. Sidney Diamond is a neuroscientist with over 30 years of academic and clinical experience. He served as senior faculty in Neurology and Biomedical Sciences at Mt. Sinai Medical School and CUNY and was Director of Clinical Neurophysiology Labs at Mt. Sinai Hospital. Since 2009, through Dr. Richard Held, he has collaborated with the Sinha Lab and continues contributing to Project Prakash and neuroscience research initiatives.



PROJECT PRAKASH INDIA TEAM



Ajay Kumar Chawariya, Director,
Strategic Planning & Organization Development
Ajay Kumar Chawariya leads Project Prakash’s India operations, overseeing outreach, vocational rehabilitation, and education programs. He collaborates closely with the U.S. team on strategy and organizational development. With over 18 years of experience in education, health, and disability sectors, he has worked with organizations like The Blind Relief Association and Venu Eye Institute. Ajay holds a Master’s in Social Work from Delhi School of Social Work and a postgraduate diploma in Public Health & Hospital Management. He is deeply committed to inclusive education and livelihood initiatives for people with disabilities.
Priti Gupta, Ph.D. Director of Research
Dr. Priti Gupta is a cognitive neuroscientist heading Project Prakash’s research team in India. Her work focuses on perceptual development, cognitive neuroscience, and brain plasticity. She holds a Ph.D. in Computational Neuroscience from Dayalbagh University and completed postdoctoral research at IIT Delhi. Priti’s studies have been published in journals like Science. Additionally, she serves as Director of Fundraising and Partnerships for the Project Prakash Charitable Trust. Passionate about maternal and child health, she balances her scientific pursuits with a love for art and music.
Chetan Ralekar, Ph.D.
Dr. Chetan Ralekar brings expertise in experimental and computational neuroscience, with research interests spanning artificial intelligence, computer vision, and brain-computer interaction. He earned his Ph.D. from IIT Delhi and completed postdoctoral work at MIT’s Brain and Cognitive Sciences department. Associated with Project Prakash since 2016, he has explored brain plasticity and learning using EEG, eye-tracking, and brain imaging. His work appears in journals like Current Biology, Scientific Reports, and IEEE publications, earning several best paper and poster awards.
Rakesh Kumar, Monitoring Coordinator
Rakesh Kumar is a Monitoring Coordinator at Project Prakash Charitable Trust, managing eye screening camps for visually impaired children in partnership with various institutions. Holding a Master’s in Social Work, Rakesh is experienced in counseling patients and families, guiding them through available treatment options, and ensuring their participation in surgical interventions. His career includes work in skill development and community health, where he organized health check-up camps and mobilized local communities for healthcare access. Rakesh’s dedication to public health and social welfare is reflected in his commitment to improving the lives of visually impaired children and promoting inclusive healthcare services.
Jamuna Parsad Gautam, Program Manager
Jamuna Parsad Gautam serves as Program Manager at Project Prakash, where he leads and organizes eye screening camps for visually impaired children in collaboration with both government and non-government institutions. With a Master’s in Social Work from Kurukshetra University, Jamuna has over 17 years of experience in the social sector, particularly in healthcare and community welfare. His work focuses on patient counseling, mobilizing families for medical interventions, and facilitating treatment processes. Jamuna has previously contributed to several esteemed organizations, including the National Health Mission, Ambuja Cement Foundation, Dalmia Bharat Group Foundation, and Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital. He remains deeply passionate about public health and patient-centered care initiatives.
Rakesh Kumar, Monitoring Coordinator

Shakila Bi, Senior Counsellor
​With nearly two decades of experience in eye care and social welfare, Shakila Bi serves as Senior Counsellor at Project Prakash. She holds a Master’s degree in Social Work from Chaudhary Devi Lal University. Shakila specializes in patient coordination, counseling, and social mobilization. She plays a pivotal role in preparing children and families before hospital visits, guiding them through the treatment journey, and providing post-treatment support. Shakila's empathetic engagement ensures that patients and their families feel supported throughout their medical care. Her long-standing dedication to patient advocacy and healthcare outreach makes her a vital member of the Project Prakash team.
Sanjeev Kumar, Coordinator
Sanjeev Kumar has been associated with Project Prakash since December 2020 and officially joined as a Coordinator in March 2023. He holds a Master’s degree in Geography from Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gorakhpur University, Uttar Pradesh, and brings three years of experience in the eye care sector. Sanjeev actively supports various programs and outreach activities at Project Prakash, contributing to the organization’s mission of providing accessible eye care to underserved communities. His role involves coordinating field operations, assisting in patient mobilization, and facilitating healthcare interventions, ensuring that Project Prakash’s services reach those in need effectively and efficiently.
Ranupriya, Optometrist
Ranupriya is an optometrist with Project Prakash, having joined the team in 2021. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Optometry from Uttar Pradesh University of Medical Sciences, Saifai, and completed her clinical internship at CL Gupta Eye Institute. In her role, Ranupriya conducts patient screenings during outreach camps, performs low vision examinations, and assists in pediatric ophthalmology services. With a keen interest in neuro-vision science research, she is passionate about contributing to the well-being of visually impaired individuals through clinical practice and scientific inquiry. Ranupriya’s compassionate approach and technical proficiency make her a valued asset to the Project Prakash team.
Purva Sethi, Research Associate
Purva Sethi is a Research Associate at Project Prakash with a background in neuropsychology. She is deeply interested in the intricate relationship between brain function, memory, and sensory experiences, particularly how these processes shape human behavior and learning. At Project Prakash, Purva is actively involved in research initiatives and derives great satisfaction from working with children, whose resilience inspires her work. Her commitment to research-driven interventions aligns with the organization’s mission of improving lives through science and care. Purva aspires to bridge neuroscience research with humanitarian service, making meaningful contributions to both academic and social welfare domains.
Stutee Narang, Research Associate
Stutee Narang is a Research Associate at Project Prakash with academic training in Neuroscience and Neuropsychology. Her research interests lie in affective and consumer neuroscience, with a focus on how multisensory inputs shape emotions, decisions, and behaviors. Stutee is passionate about applying scientific insights to real-world challenges and connecting cognitive research to practical solutions. At Project Prakash, she contributes to studies that explore the complexities of human perception and behavior, particularly among visually impaired children. Through her work, Stutee aims to translate research findings into interventions that enhance the quality of life for underserved communities while advancing the field of translational neuroscience.
Rani Chawariya, Counsellor
Rani Chawariya works as a Counsellor with Project Prakash Charitable Trust, supporting the education and vocational rehabilitation of visually impaired children and youth. A graduate of the University of Delhi, Rani recently completed her Master’s in Social Work from Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi. She plays a pivotal role in guiding Prakash children enrolled at partner institutions such as the National Association for the Blind and the Blind Relief Association, Delhi. Rani’s counseling services ensure children receive holistic support, both educational and emotional, fostering their empowerment and rehabilitation. She remains committed to promoting inclusivity and livelihood opportunities for individuals with blindness.
Abhishek Kumar, Data and Technical Support Coordinator
Abhishek Kumar has been part of Project Prakash since 2020, managing patient-related data and providing essential technical support for program operations. A certified Computer Operator and Programming Assistant, he ensures the accuracy and security of the organization’s digital records and databases. Currently, Abhishek is pursuing Cost Management Accounting (CMA) from the Institute of Cost Accountants of India. His skills in data management and his commitment to operational efficiency play a critical role in supporting Project Prakash’s outreach and healthcare initiatives. Abhishek’s contributions help maintain seamless coordination across various programs, directly impacting service delivery to visually impaired children.
Vidya Prakash, Outreach Coordinator
Vidya Prakash serves as the Outreach Coordinator for Project Prakash in New Delhi. With a Master’s degree from Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gorakhpur University, he has over a decade of experience in community development through projects with organizations like PGSS Gorakhpur and NABARD. Between 2019 and 2021, Vidya successfully coordinated two Prakash Vision Centers in Uttar Pradesh, enhancing pediatric eye care services in rural areas. In his current role, he organizes outreach initiatives, including pre-camp visits, pediatric eye screening camps, and patient welfare programs. Vidya’s dedication to fieldwork and grassroots healthcare access has made him an invaluable member of the Project Prakash team.











PROJECT PRAKASH MEDICAL TEAM



Dr. Suma Ganesh
Dr. Suma Ganesh is Chairperson of the Pediatric Centre of Excellence and Director of Pediatric Ophthalmology, Strabismus, and Neuro-Ophthalmology at Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital (SCEH). With over 29 years of clinical experience, she has been instrumental in advancing pediatric eye care in India. An alumna of M.B.B.S. and M.S. Ophthalmology, she completed the Marsh Carter Fellowship at Manhattan Eye and Ear Hospital, USA. Dr. Ganesh is a recipient of several honors, including the Dr. S.D. Athavale Award and the ACOIN Award for her work in strabismus. She actively collaborates with global organizations like ORBIS International and Seva Foundation, passionately working towards eliminating childhood blindness in India.
Dr. Umang Mathur
Dr. Umang Mathur is the Chief Executive Officer of Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital (SCEH), Delhi, and has been pivotal in transforming the 100-year-old institution into a leading eye care center in North India. Since joining in 1998, he has established multiple secondary and primary vision centers in underserved areas. A skilled surgeon, he trained in Ophthalmology at LV Prasad Eye Institute, where he also specialized in Cornea and Anterior Segment. Notably, he performed cataract surgery for former President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. Beyond his clinical work, Dr. Mathur is an active researcher and the founder of Bodhya Eye Consortium, strengthening community eye care partnerships across India.
Dr. Shalinder Sabherwal
Dr. Shalinder Sabherwal is Director of Public Health and Projects at Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital (SCEH) Network. He completed his ophthalmology training at RP Centre, AIIMS, followed by an FRCS from Glasgow and a Master’s in Public Health for Eye Care with distinction from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). He is also affiliated with LSHTM’s International Centre for Eye Health. Dr. Sabherwal oversees public health programs through primary and secondary vision centers and leads various outreach projects. Recognized with the Hooper Prize and the VISION 2020 India Best Paper Award, he currently serves on the scientific committee of VISION 2020 India, driving impactful eye health initiatives.
PROJECT PRAKASH MAHARASHTRA (INDIA)TEAM



Shashikant Bhise, Assistant Program Manager
Shashikant Bhise serves as Assistant Program Manager for Project Prakash’s Maharashtra initiative, overseeing the planning and execution of outreach operations. He plays a vital role in patient mobilization, ensuring children receive timely surgical interventions at H.V. Desai Eye Hospital. Shashikant holds a Master’s degree in Social Work from Shivaji University, Kolhapur, and brings over 17 years of experience in the healthcare sector. His career spans leadership positions in both government and non-government projects, where he managed community health initiatives and public awareness campaigns. Shashikant’s extensive field experience and commitment to accessible healthcare have made him an integral part of Project Prakash’s Maharashtra operations.
Asad Fuzail Zahid Akhtar, Optometrist
Asad Fuzail Zahid Akhtar is an Optometrist with Project Prakash Maharashtra, providing clinical services and patient care during outreach camps and hospital visits. He completed his Diploma in Optometry from Rotary Eye Hospital Institute of Ophthalmology, affiliated with Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, and refined his skills through an internship at PBMA’s H.V. Desai Eye Hospital in Pune. Asad gained practical experience in pediatric ophthalmology, glaucoma, retina care, general ophthalmology, and low vision screening. His commitment to community eye care and expertise in vision screening make him a valuable asset to Project Prakash, where he works to improve the lives of children affected by visual impairments.
Ram Ajinath Sanap, Vision Technician
Ram Ajinath Sanap is a Vision Technician with Project Prakash Maharashtra, responsible for conducting eye screenings and assisting with vision care services. He earned his Diploma in Ophthalmic Technology from PBMA’s H.V. Desai College of Optometry, Pune, and underwent clinical postings in multiple specialties, including pediatric ophthalmology, cornea, glaucoma, retina, and general ophthalmology. His experience also extends to operation theatre procedures and outreach eye camps. Ram plays an essential role in supporting surgical referrals and post-operative care, contributing to the organization’s goal of providing accessible, quality eye care services to underserved communities in Maharashtra.
