Meet Ruhi, Juhi & Nitya

Summary

Ruhi (11), Juhi (9), and Nitya (5) are three sisters from Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh, who were all born with bilateral congenital cataracts. Their mother has lived with a vision condition since birth, so she knew firsthand how poor sight can shape a childhood. She held on to one hope: that her daughters would see a different future. With timely eye care through Project Prakash, all three sisters have now had surgery and are beginning to see the world clearly for the first time.

Their story shows that when children get the right care at the right time, they gain much more than sight. They gain possibility.

Their Story

For most of their lives, the three sisters knew the world only as a blur. Congenital cataracts clouded the lenses of both their eyes. Because of that, things most children take for granted were a daily struggle: reading a page, recognising a familiar face across a room, keeping up with lessons at school.

Their mother understood these challenges better than anyone. Having lived with a vision condition of her own since birth, she knew how much a child can miss when the world stays out of focus. She also knew how much could change if her daughters got the chance she never had.

That chance came through Project Prakash. All three sisters were identified and brought into care, and each has now undergone cataract surgery. For Ruhi, Juhi, and Nitya, the blur is giving way to faces, colours, letters, and the everyday details of a world they can finally see.

Their new beginning also comes at an important time. Nitya is just five, and early treatment gives the young brain its best opportunity to learn to use newly restored sight. Understanding how the brain adapts after sight restoration, at every age, is at the heart of Project Prakash's scientific work.

Three sisters and three surgeries have opened three futures that now look very different. Ruhi, Juhi, and Nitya can look forward to learning, playing, and growing up seeing the world as it is. Their mother's hope has become their reality.
